Modern-day dilemma

Should I "hide" updates from my few conservative Facebook "friends" because it raises my blood pressure to have the parade of baby pictures interrupted by "Why would I want the Government to take over healthcare? What will we do when they bankrupt it? Oh, that's right, just print more Obama bucks!"? Or should I keep responding with half-snarky-half-trying-to-convince-them-of-the-error-of-their-ways comments because I live in an insular little bubble of lefties and Facebook is one of my few connections to those Sarah Palin would call "real Americans"?

Hide, block, whatever. Its just unnecessary blood pressure additives. Before FB, did you care what the girl from your high school who you never really knew but who, for alphabetical reasons, often sat near you, thought about anything!? No. Hide that s***.

Dunno, I think it's good to get the blood boiling in what is an essentially low-stakes way. It's like the emotional equivalent to jumping into the lake in January and features some of the same restorative properties.

Don't block them. They're probably in a similar "real America" bubble. Keep fighting the fight.

I'm strongly tempted to unfriend them altogether. The Awl's advice columnist, Emily Gould, addressed this dilemma recently. (Look at me, folding two of your recent blog topics--advice columnists and Facebook conservatism) into one tidy comment.)

From TA (too lazy to log in):

A new advice columnist, thank you Jake! Emily Gould seems quite wise. I did engage once after the Iowa Supreme Court gay marriage ruling, and felt like it was not a total failure, but on health care I have been ignoring it. Perhaps I will try again.

The only reason I'm "friends" with this person is because I confused him for his brother, who I did not know well but was in our class in high school. This little brother I don't really know from Adam. But I guess that means I will not be burning any bridges if I piss him off by responding.
